Darren Byfield Calls for a Change of Mindset as Walsall Slip to Defeat

Here's how interim Saddlers boss Darren Byfield saw his side's latest performance.
Interim Walsall boss Darren Byfield admitted his team has to improve mentally if they are to end the now two-season strong streak of flattering to deceive.

After leading the league for much of the campaign, the Saddlers will end the campaign in mid-table. Finishing in form not too dissimilar to that of last season, during which they fell from the top into the PlayOffs before losing to AFC Wimbledon in the final.

However, after seeing the Saddlers lose two-nil at home to Harrogate Town on Saturday afternoon, Byfield agreed his squad has to improve if they are to get back in the hunt next season.

Speaking to the assembled media, Darren was first asked how important it is for Walsall to change the narrative, to which he said: "Of course it is. That comes from me giving them challenges.

"It’s standards: making sure they’re doing everything right away from the ground, at home, on the grass and at the stadium.

"These are what makes elite professional footballers, and if we don’t adhere to these things, then you’re not going to get the reward you want.

"Because it can’t be I want to win the league, I want to get automatic promotion, I want to be in the play-offs. Its actions and everything is actions.

"We have to make sure that mentality is a must."
