Walsall, who were winless in their five opening games of the season, secured their first victory of the season as they defeated Stevenage by Wilkinson's early goal-to-nil in front of over 4,000 fans at the Banks's on Saturday afternoon.

Taylor, who had resisted the urge to rotate his frontline despite a lack of goals, praised Wilkinson for all the hard work he puts in on the training ground, insisting the goal is the least the former Leyton Orient man deserves

Speaking to the assembled media, Matthew said; "It was a great finish. Conor does that every single day in training. He needed it and wanted it, and I truly believe he's an extremely talented footballer.

"He's got a wonderful touch and guile. He sees a pass and is intelligent on the pitch. And I think that's probably the hardest Conor has worked on the pitch in a Walsall shirt.

"I think we're a good team. I questioned the players' work rate after Hartlepool, but they've given the best reaction possible.

"They've produced a performance that has allowed us to win three points. We won't get too high as it's only three points.

"It's about producing consistency in our performances, but we were competitive to a man and our number nine was ruthless when he got the opportunity."
