Darrell Clarke Delighted as Battling Saddlers Slay Salford

Walsall manager Darrell Clarke has spoken to the press following the Saddlers' hard-fought victory over Salford City and admitted he was delighted as they maintained their unbeaten start to 2020.
Heading into the match on the back of a New Year's Day victory over Leyton Orient, the Saddlers were able to withstand plenty of pressure to secure their fifth win from nine league games.

Goals from striker Caolan Lavery and Josh Gordon - the duo bagging their eighth goals of the season - were enough to secure the victory for the Saddlers despite Brandon Thomas-Asante giving Salford some home nineteen minutes into the second-half.

Manager Clarke, who continued his run of naming changed sides as the fixture list continues to throw up quickfire outings, went on to praise his young side as they showed their defensive prowess in front of 1,300 travelling fans.

Speaking to the assembled media, Darrell said; "It was a really battling performance. We knew it was going to be a very, very tough away game with the injuries and the suspensions that we had.

"I’m delighted to come away with the three points, I thought it was going to be a very tough afternoon, which it was. You look at the squad of 18, there’s seven lads that have come through the academy system.

"An 18-year-old starting, two 18-year-old’s on the bench. Liam pulls off that great save, he’s come through the system. It’s probably getting a bit back, today, to the Walsall way.

"But we have to make sure we don’t push these young lads too early and that they keep learning and developing and they’re given that time to do that. Really pleased and the experienced boys today were absolutely superb as well."
