Earlier today Walsall Under 18s took on Shrewsbury Town Under 18s in the Final of this season's Midland Floodlit Youth Cup competition.

The visitors got the game underway and promptly had the first chance of the game, they swiftly won a corner but couldn't make use of it as the ball was cleared inside the Saddlers' area by Kyle Rowley.

The Shrews took the lead early on, Josh Ginnelly was fed in by Anderson and broke through the defence and beat Saddlers' stopper Dan Jezeph in a one-on-one situation.

Walsall continued to be under a little pressure as the Shrews sought another goal. The Salop formation, with three at the back, proving a very strong one.

The Saddlers equalised after a Rico Henry shot was parried by the 'keeper and high-scoring Tevin Shakespeare was alert to the rebound to slot home from the angle on the left side of goal.

Kouhyar sent a shot wide for the Saddlers as the Shrews backed off, Neil Woods' men looking to get the ball down and play, whilst making use of openings.

Walsall continued to take charge of the game, Tevin Shakespeare unlucky not to connect with a dangerous ball into the box.

Rico Henry had another shot parried by the 'keeper Rowley, sadly, for Walsall, this save was a better one and went well wide of the area, and was eventually cleared.

Walsall soon went into the lead as Tevin Shalkespeare struck past the 'keeper following a good cross-field ball, his control in the box enough to move him away from his marker.

Walsall's Dan Jezeph was called into action as Shrewsbury's Anderson sent a shot in from distance. The resulting corner went out of play for a goal-kick.

Jezeph was called into action soon after, he charged out and headed the ball out as Shrewsbury threatened.

Just over half-way through the half Walsall were awarded a free kick outside the Shrews' area, a training ground free kick was attempted but cleared.

Kyle Rowley did well to defend from a Shrews cross, the resulting corner was also cleared as the visitors sought to get back on level terms.

Tevin Shakespeare again found space and sent in a swirling shot from distance, the Shrews 'keeper did well to follow the shot and gather the ball at the second attempt.

Up at the other end the visitors sought a penalty as an attacker was felled, referee Tom Reaves gave a corner, which was wasted by the Shrews.

Later the Shrews had another penalty shout denied, the corner was given and resulted in a shot that was blocked.

Walsall's Kyle Rowley and Callum Cockerill-Mollett both blocked the shot and received some treatment from the physio. The resulting corner was eventually taken and partially cleared, although the Shrews won another flag kick that fell to Hickman, who could only fire wide of goal.

Walsall continued to use the wings well, Rico Henry showing plenty of pace, as Tevin Shakespeare proved difficult for the defenders to track.

Luke Delaney was the next to send in a long-range effort, the 'keeper choosing to parry the ball rather than catch, though it did go wide of goal and out of danger.

At the other end Shrewsbury also had a shot at goal, Anderson sending a curling effort over the bar.

Both sides had good small spells of possession as the referee blew for the break.

The second half got underway, with the Saddlers attacking the Tile Choice Stand. An early Saddlers cross didn't create danger as it slipped under Brendan Pooni's foot and out for a goal-kick.

The Saddlers won a free kick, which Delaney played into the box, it was headed down by Kyle Rowley for Rico Henry to strike a volley from outside the area, Shrews' goalkeeper Rowley doing well to save.

The visitors then enjoyed a good spell of possession, but couldn't create an opening as the only ball into the final third went out for a goal-kick.

The Saddlers continued to allow the Shrews to control the ball, but again they couldn't create an opening, a cross was defended well for a goal-kick.

Walsall had a chance of their own as Kouhyar was found well on the left-side of the box, he sent a header towards goal, Rowley saving well.

Walsall were awarded a free kick out wide as Kouyhar was felled. The ball was lifted into the box by Smith as Kyle Rowley rose well to force a good save from the 'keeper.

Dan Jezeph was alert to save from the Shrews' counter as he made his first save of the half. The Salop enjoying another spell on the ball.

Walsall also had a spell of patient play, neither side breaking forward with plenty of midfield passing.

Not long before the 70th minute Shrewsbury made the first change of the game as George Hughes replaced Niall Flint.

Shrewsbury did well to defend a series of crosses, a corner awarded from the final one, this was played in and eventually sent clear, a brief Saddlers return ball was also cut-out.

Saddlers' stopper Dan Jezeph did well to save from a dangerous Ethan Jones shot, as the Shrews looked to make good use of the counter.

The resulting corner was worked into the box, but was sent for a goal kick as the striker couldn't connect with an over-hit pass.

After a brief break in play for a Shrewsbury player to receive treatment, the game got back underway with the Shrews in attack.

Josh Ginnelly, who opened the scoring, broke into the box and turned well, but he was blocked off by Kyle Rowley, the corner was cleared as the visitors wasted a good opening.

Walsall made their first change of the game as Nathan Owen replaced Callum Cockerill-Mowett, whilst Kenton replaced Alexander for the Shrews.

With around ten minutes of the game remaining Pooni was caught offside,a good ball form Shakespeare to create the opening.

As a Shrews' cross went behind goal from an Anderson effort they made their final change of the game, Tom King was replaced by John McAtee.

The Saddlers also had an opening cancelled out as the Shrews remained alert at the back.

Shrewsbury won another corner as the clock ticked away, the ball was worked in but came to an end as McAtee fouled his man, and picked up the opening caution of the game.

Walsall made their second change of the game as Romario Reid, who scored against the Shrews last week, replaced Brendan Pooni.

Walsall's Luke Delaney volleyed a shot wide of goal following a good Kouhyar cross, as the game neared it's conclusion.

Dan Jezeph did well to save from another dangerous Shrews chance, Ginnelly cut inside and crossed into the box, the ball rebounded off the post and Saddlers defender Smith as a Fletcher follow-up strike was denied.

The resulting corner fell to Anderson, his header was well saved as Walsall looked to hold on to the lead.

Later Nathan Owen sent a volley towards goal following a great break from the back, unlucky for the Saddlers, Hickman defending well to deny the midfielder.

With seconds remaining Josh Ginnelly did well to force a tackle and earn his side a free kick. The chance was wasted and hit the top of the wall as the referee blew for full-time.

With the full-time whistle blown Walsall lift the Midland Floodlit Youth Cup for the second time in three season's, and the third time overall.
