Smith Discusses 'Joke' Penalty Decision

Walsall manager Dean Smith has spoken to the press following Tuesday evening's Sky Bet League 1 draw between his Saddlers side and Swindon Town, and has criticised referee Iain Williamson's decision to award Swindon their first penalty, insisting that the foul was on Richard O'Donnell and not the other way around.

Speaking to the Express & Star, Smith said; "He gave them a penalty for a foul on Richard O’Donnell and looking back on it, it looks like a foul.

“I didn’t realise you could give a penalty when the ball goes out of play. That was the game changer and got their tails up.

“I was laughing to be honest. I get told I make too many excuses but I will let people look at that and make up their own minds, certainly the first penalty.

“It is one of those things you have to laugh about. I don’t think I would be more angry if there was something riding on it. I was angry enough anyway.

“We want to finish as high as we can and it was a joke of a decision which changed the course of the game. It made it a very entertaining game, I will give him that.

“It was a superb game of football. Two teams who try and play the right way. They started very well and it took us five or ten minutes to get to grips with it.

“Richard has made a couple of good saves then. After that, I thought we were very good. We scored and I thought we were comfortable.

“The second goal it looked like game over and then the referee intervened. I thought it was a great game of football spoiled by two decisions.”
