WALSALL'S CONTRACT COUNTDOWN CONTINUES

As we head towards the thirtieth game of the Sky Bet League 1 campaign, attention turns to contracts. With players such as Richard O'Donnell, Paul Downing and Amadou Bakayoko within just a few months of a potential departure there has never been a better time to get around the negotiating table.
As we head towards the thirtieth game of the Sky Bet League 1 campaign, attention turns to contracts. With players such as Richard O'Donnell, Paul Downing and Amadou Bakayoko within just a few months of a potential departure there has never been a better time to get around the negotiating table.

Other players set to be out-of-contract include, Liam Kinsella, Ashley Grimes, Ben Purkiss and Reece Flanagan, with several others heading into the final year of their agreement.

With the Saddlers just a few points off the play-off places, and the club's first ever appearance at Wembley Stadium a little over a month away it shouldn't be hugely difficult to convince the majority of the players to agree new terms, especially if you consider squad harmony as a factor in the negotiations.

Previously, Walsall manager Dean Smith has sought to tie down the core members of the squad before the end of the season, and on some occasions before the Christmas period, so it does come as a bit of a surprise that so many members of the side are within sight of the end of their deals.

Hopefully over the coming weeks and months we will begin to see the club tie down the aforementioned 'core', and possibly look to improve the squad with a few summer signings, and who knows, Championship football can be a pretty attractive bargaining tool...
