REPORT: NOTTS COUNTY 1 WALSALL 2

Earlier today Walsall Football Club made the short trip to Nottingham, to take on Notts County in the latest Sky Bet League One fixture of the season. Below is our Match Report.
Earlier today Walsall Football Club made the short trip to Nottingham, to take on Notts County in the latest Sky Bet League One fixture of the season. Below is our Match Report.

The Saddlers started the game well, Ben Purkis feeding the ball to Jordan Cook, who forced a save from veteran goalkeeper Roy Carroll, the resulting corner was cleared by the Magpies' defence.

County had their first chance through Petrasso, whose shot was saved by O'Donnell, Noble's follow-up was saved, the resulting corner was defended for another corner, this was also saved, the third corner was cleared, with County being caught offside during the follow up.

After eleven minutes, James Chambers fouled his marker, gifting County a free kick, they failed to take advantage as Noble sent a shot wide.

Soon after, former Manchester United 'keeper Roy Carroll easily grasped a tame shot from Walsall's Anthony Forde.

Just before the fifteen minute mark Tom Bradshaw was fouled by Edwards, the Saddlers failed to make use of their advantage, as Carroll gathered the ball.

 GOAL: NOTTS COUNTY 0 WALSALL 1 

Walsall took the lead via a defensive error, Romaine Sawyers and Jordan Cook linked up well, with Cook confusing County defender Gary Jones, who stuck out a foot to send the ball home, via the post.

Later. County midfielders Noble and Thompson linked up well to send Ismail down the wing, his decent cross was cleared.

County were then awarded a free kick which was defended for a corner, which was also dealt with by the Saddlers defence. Then, Petrasso fed Thompson, who turned and had a shot saved by Walsall's O'Donnell.

Soon after, winger Ismail beat his marker, and sent in a great cross, luckily for the Saddlers, no-one in a County shirt was willing to gamble on the cross.

The Saddlers continued to allow County the majority of the ball, often sitting too deep.

Just before the twenty-eighth minute County were awarded a free kick, the ball in defended by Ben Purkiss, who looked to be fouled during his clearance, referee Simon Hooper was happy to award a goal kick in the Saddlers favour.

At the other end, Walsall's Andy Taylor sent in a high ball, but Carroll easily gathered.

 GOAL: NOTTS COUNTY 1 WALSALL 1 

County got back into the game after thirty-two minutes, via Garry Thompson, McLaughlin's cross from the left finding the striker who slotted home with aplomb.

Soon after, an increasingly confident Thompson sent a shot over the bar, with the Saddlers appearing to back off the front-man.

Cook sent a shot across goal, the County clearance resulted in Richard O'Donnell coming out to head clear.

Just before the forty minute mark County were awarded a free kick following a foul by Bradshaw, this was not taken advantage of, as the Saddlers back-line held strong.

Petrasso then went on a mazy run which ended with good Saddlers defending.

Michael Cain sent a shot in on goal, Carroll saving well. County's follow up ended in exactly the same way, O'Donnell saving well from a tame effort.

Tom Bradshaw had a shot blocked for a corner, James Chambers' header cleared off the line, Bradshaw fouled his marker during the follow-up, resulting in a free kick for the home side.

As half-time edged near, McLaughlin had a shot saved, by Richard O'Donnell.

Just before the break Walsall captain Adam Chambers gifted the ball to the home side with Petrasso taking possession and beating two defenders before sending a shot in on target, O'Donnell saving well from the Canadian midfielder.

Early into the second half Andy Taylor seized on a loose pass to send in a cross, Carroll gathering well to spare the defenders' blushes. The Saddlers continued to pressurise their opponents, with patient passing play.

Soon after the forty-eighth minute, Walsall's top-scorer Bradshaw lost possession, allowing a County attack, Noble sending a shot wide after a good counter display.

Back at the other end, Tom Bradshaw was tackled well by Edwards, stopping a Saddlers attack.

Walsall again continued with their patient play, though frequently failed to make use of their time on the ball. The early minutes of the half proving scrappy from both sides.

After fifty-six minutes Walsall broke down the wing, Taylor finding Forde whose shot was chested away by Carroll.

Shaun Harrad then replaced Garry Thompson after fifty-seven minutes, soon after Walsall's Romaine Sawyers tested Gary Jones with a powerful run, his shot going over the bar.

Then, veteran James Chambers defended well, as Petrasso threatened to break free of the Saddlers defence.

 GOAL: NOTTS COUNTY 1 WALSALL 2 

Walsall went back into the lead via a Tom Bradshaw penalty, referee Hooper awarding the kick after Bradshaw looked to flick the ball over Hollis, the defender handling during the confusion.

Bradshaw's spot kick, and his seventh of the season, giving Carroll no chance.

Soon after manager Shaun Derry made another change, with Murray replacing loaned-in Nottingham Forest winger McLaughlin.

With around twenty minutes remaining, Walsall had a free kick out wide, the opportunity was wasted by the travelling side.

Blair Adams sent in a poor cross, the ball drifting out for a Saddlers goal-kick, this was also wasted by Richard O'Donnell, allowing County a throw-in.

Walsall then won a corner via a deflected Michael Cain effort, the Leicester City loanee opting against the pass. The corner was subsequently wasted by the Saddlers.

As the game entered the final fifteen minutes, Anthony Forde looked for Bradshaw, who couldn't direct his effort past Carroll.

The Saddlers continued to frustrate the home support, with solid defensive play from the likes of James Chambers and Ben Purkiss.

Cook sent in a tame effort after beating his marker, however his effort wasn't enough to test Carroll.

Jordan Cook was then substituted for the more defensive minded Mal Benning, whilst Nicky Wroe replaced Gary Jones.

Before the changes were made Walsall's Paul Downing was booked for a foul, County failed to make use of the free kick.

Walsall went down the other end, Bradshaw sending a shot over the bar following good play from Romaine Sawyers. Soon after Romaine was crowded out by the county defence as he threatened to shoot.

With under ten minutes remaining Walsall bought on Mathieu Manset and Ashley Grimes for Tom Bradshaw and Romaine Sawyers, as Dean Smith looked to secure all three points,

County were awarded a late corner which was given and cleared by James Chambers.

Petrasso continued to be a threat, as the wideman sent in a cross, just behind Murray. Fellow midfielder Ismail also making a nuisance of himself.

Petrasso won a late corner off Ben Purkiss, the ball in was cleared.

County were awarded a late free kick as Mal Benning slid in to defend an attack, Liam Noble's free kick was saved well by O'Donnell, the corner was eventually cleared by Ashley Grimes.

Walsall continued to defend well as County piled on the pressure late on as Harrad headed wide from a Wroe cross, referee Hooper awarding four minutes of added time.

As the referee blew for full time Walsall put an end to County's unbeaten run, whilst picking up their first away win of the Sky Bet League One campaign.
