Match Report: Walsall 2-4 Salford City

Here's our Match Report from the Saddlers' League Two clash with Salford City.
Walsall's 2026/27 League Two campaign resumed on Monday evening when they welcomed league leaders Salford City to the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium for a televised clash under the lights.

Salford got the action underway, and they began the game brightly, winning a corner just one minute in as Ryan Leak blocked a shot behind, though nothing would come of the early flag-kick.

The visiting side continued to press, with Jorge Grant crossing the ball into the area for Kelly N'Mai, in the fourth minute, though his effort on goal was blocked, moments before Elliott Bonds drew a save from Walsall shot-stopper, Jed Ward, with a strike from outside the box.

City continued to test the Walsall defences as play continued, with Grant picking out Macaulay Langstaff, with a seventh minute cross into the box, though nothing would come of it, as the initial strike was blocked, and the follow-up effort sailed wide.

Walsall began to grow into the game as time wore on, and could have opened the scoring nine minutes in, as a through ball from Tai Sodje was picked up by Aaron Pressley, whose strike goal-wards from outside the box sailed narrowly over the crossbar.

Salford were quick to work the ball back to the other end, where Ward was called into action again, to deny Abraham Odoh from a tight angle, before the shot-stopper was again tasked with keeping an effort out, this time from Luke Molyneux, moments later, with the resulting corner coming to nothing, as Bonds shot sailed wide.

The visiting side were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position, in the thirteenth minute, from which Molyneux crossed the ball into the box for Will Aimson, whose effort sailed wide of the target.

Mason Hancock turned the ball behind in the fourteenth minute, with Molyneux crossing the ball in from the corner, for Brendan Wiredu, whose headed goal-wards sailed inches over the crossbar.

Walsall probably should have taken the lead, in the nineteenth minute, as Pressley raced into the box and fired an effort narrowly wide of the far post. A corner resulted, though City 'keeper, Will Norris, had not touched the ball, but nothing would come of it, as the shot-stopper was able to gather Isaac Moore's effort.

Salford were quick to work the ball back to the other end, where Wiredu crossed it to Grant, whose effort on goal, from outside the area, was well saved by Ward.

Things settled a little after that, with both sides enjoying spells with the ball, without creating anything to further test their opposition defences.

Walsall finally found a way through, in the thirty-first minute, but Sodje's effort on goal sailed high and wide of the target.

At the other end, five minutes later, the visiting side could have taken the lead, as Wiredu played the ball on for N'Mai, whose shot from a tight angle was turned behind by Ward, with the resulting corner ultimately coming to nothing.

Salford continued to see much of the ball as the game continued, though they were unable to make use of the possession.

With forty-five minutes on the clock, Salford found the breakthrough, as Molyneux crossed the ball in for Langstaff, who slotted home into the bottom corner.

After one additional minute was played, the sides headed off to regroup, with Salford leading by one-goal-to-nil.

HALF-TIME
WALSALL 0-1 SALFORD

The teams returned unchanged after the break, and Walsall got the action back underway, though it was short-lived, as moments after the restart, the game was paused, allowing Courtney Clarke to receive attention from the Walsall medics after he was caught in the face.

Fortunately, he was soon back on his feet, and play resumed.

Salford set about looking to double their advantage, going close in the fifty-second minute, as Grant played in Langstaff, whose shot from outside the box sailed narrowly over the crossbar. The side continued to press, with N'Mai crossing the ball to Bonds, moments later, though his effort on goal would also not find the target, as it was blocked.

With fifty-four minutes on the clock, City had more luck, as Wiredu won the ball on the edge of the Walsall area, and laid it off to Grant, whose curling effort from outside the box found the back of the net, doubling his sides advantage.

The visiting side set about looking for a third, with Bonds firing wide in the fifty-seventh minute.

With fifty-eight minutes on the clock, Walsall chose to make their first changes of the evening, with Sven Sprangler and Courtney Clarke making way for Charlie Crew and Lewis Simper.

Less than one minute after the changes were completed, Walsall pulled a goal back, as Sodje  crossed a low ball across the box, for Pressley, who fired home from close range.

As we reached the hour mark, Salford opted to make their first substitutions of the game, with Kelly N'Mai and Jorge Grant departing, as Kallum Cesay and former Saddler loanee, Nathan Asiimwe joined the fray.

Eight minutes after his introduction into the game, Sprangler levelled the scores, as he got on the end of a Hancock cross into the box and headed home from close range.

Parity was short-lived, as Salford raced up to the other end, where a headed pass from Langstaff allowed Cesay a shot from a tight angle, from which he found the target, to put his side ahead once again.

Isaac Moore became the first player to see yellow, as he was cautioned in the seventieth minute, following a foul on Wiredu.

With seventy-one minutes on the clock, the Saddlers chose to make two further changes to their line-up, with Tai Sodje and Ryan Leak making way, as Andy Dallas and James Furlong took their places.

Two minutes after that, City opted to make two further changes of their own, with Brendan Wiredu and Abraham Odoh the men to depart, as Adebola Oluwo and Matt Butcher were brought on.

Walsall won a corner, in the seventy-seventh minute, after a quieter couple of minutes, as Oluwo turned the ball behind, though nothing would come of the flag-kick as Salford cleared.

Salford won a free-kick in a dangerous position, just outside the box, in the seventy-ninth minute, as James Connolly fouled Cesay. The wall stood firm, with a corner resulting, from which another followed. Molyneux crossed the ball into the centre of the box, where Oluwo was waiting to head home to all but put the game to bed.

The Saddlers set about looking to pull a goal back quickly, with Pressley seeing an eighty-fourth minute shot blocked behind for a corner, from which Simper found Connolly, whose headed effort narrowly missed the target.

The visiting side soon had the ball up at the other end, thanks to a fast break from former Walsall man, Dan Scarr, who played it through to Molyneux, whose strike from some thirty-five yards out sailed high and wide.

Salford chose to make their final change of the evening, in the eighty-ninth minute, as Macaulay Langstaff made way for Daniel Udoh.

Seven additional minutes were added to end the match, during which, Walsall won two corner kicks, though they were unable to make either count as the Salford defences stood firm.

There was little further action of note, and the game was brought to its conclusion, with Salford winning by four-goals-to-two, as Walsall suffered their first defeat of the league campaign.
