Match Preview: v Accrington Stanley (H)

Here we look ahead to the Saddlers' League Two clash with Accrington Stanley.
Bescot Banter - Walsall FC NewsWalsall and Accrington Stanley will face off in a Sky Bet League Two clash at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

NEWS & VIEWS

Walsall suffered their first defeat of the season in midweek as, after once again going ninety minutes without conceding, they exited the Carabao Cup at the hands of Leyton Orient, who won the post-match penalty shoot-out 6-5.

Going into the match on the back of a three-game all-competition undefeated streak, the Saddlers were more than equal to their opponents but just couldn't find that all-important killer touch in the final third.

At the other end of the pitch, goalkeeper Jed Ward continued his superb start to the season as he provided another demonstration of the ability that convinced the club to hand him a multiple-year deal earlier in the summer.

While the recent lack of goals is concerning, we agree the team has the makings of a successful unit if it can convert some of the goal-scoring chances it creates.

We go into this weekend's match still without suffering a normal-time defeat, and with far more positives than negatives to think about.

Signing some fourteen players across the summer, we would have expected to see the team struggle to perform over the opening few weeks, but this hasn't been the case; instead, we have a team that works hard both in defence and attack, and with a bit more luck could make a real run at the prize-giving positions in nine months time...

TEAM NEWS

Alex Pattison remains sidelined, whilst recent arrival Roman Dixon could return from a knock after missing the last two games.

THE OPPOSITION

Opponents, Accrington Stanley, are winless so far this season after they opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Crewe Alexandra in the opening round of the Carabao Cup, before being held to a draw by Colchester United on the opening day of the league season.

Their tough start to the season continued last weekend as goals from former Saddler Jack Fitzwater and Gwion Edwards saw opponents Exeter City collect all three points.

After enjoying a midweek without action, Stanley should be the fresher of the two sides this weekend as they look to bring their winless run to an end at the expense of the Saddlers.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Walsall and the current incarnation of Accrington Stanley, which was formed in October 1968, have met on just eleven previous occasions, and it's Stanley that hold a head-to-head advantage, having won five times compared to the Saddlers' four, with the spoils being share twice.

Stanley lost the first meeting between the two sides. Taking place at Fraser Eagle Stadium on Saturday, 21st October 2006, goals from Hector Sam and Mark Wright either side of an Ian Craney effort were enough to secure the win for the Saddlers.

THE LAST TIME WE MET

The most recent meeting, also In League Two, took place at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium on Saturday, 24th January 2026, and saw the spoils shared as neither side was able to find a match-winning goal.

PLAYED FOR BOTH

There have been a variety of players to pull on the shirts of the Saddlers and Stanley, with the likes of Mark Hughes, Jack Nolan, George Bowerman, and Jack Rose all Playing for Both.

MATCH OFFICIALS

The EFL has confirmed that William Davis, who is based in Lancashire, will take charge of the match, with Harley Hetherington and Sean Rothwell being named as assistant referees, whilst Darren Wilding has been selected as Fourth Official.

Last season, referee Davis took charge of seventeen games across a variety of competitions, where he issued forty-four cautions and two red cards.
