James Connolly Determined to Lead by Example

The Saddlers' newest recruit has insisted he will work hard for the cause after making the move to WS1.
Bescot Banter - Walsall FC NewsFollowing the news that he'd become the Saddlers' fourth signing of the summer, former Crewe Alexandra defender James Connolly has spoken of his delight as he opens a new chapter in his career.

Moving to WS1 after turning down a new contract at the Mornflake Stadium, Connolly spoke of what he hopes to bring to the Saddlers' backline, including leadership, determination, and desire.

He said, "It feels good, I’m buzzing to get it done, and I’m hoping for some good seasons together.

"I’ve had some good conversations with the gaffer, spoke to him a couple of times, and it was massive for me because as soon as I spoke to him, I wanted to get things done.

"The way he sees football and what his ambitions are for this season and beyond is massive, so for me personally it’ll be massive to work for Lee, Richard too in my development as a player – hopefully I can get lots of work with them on the training pitch and after games to help me.

"First and foremost, I’m a defender who wants to keep the ball out the net, I see myself as a bit of a leader in the way I talk to my teammates, and I like having the ball at my feet.

"I know how close the football club has got in recent years, and I’ve played against them a few times recently, the atmosphere at the stadium has always been good, so having that with the gaffer’s ambitions was a big turning point for me.

"I’m looking forward to getting stuck in, and hopefully we can be in a place come the end of the season where the supporters have something to cheer about - we all want that."
