Walsall Name Lee Grant as New Head Coach

The Saddlers have confirmed their new head coach as they prepare for another season in the fourth tier.
Bescot Banter - Walsall FC NewsWalsall have confirmed the appointment of former Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley goalkeeper Lee Grant as the club's new first-team head coach on a three-year contract.

Born in Hemel Hempstead, Grant turned professional with Derby in 2000, and went on to make 186 appearances across two stays at Pride Park.

Going on to make over 270 appearances during spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley, Grant built a successful career between the sticks, making further appearances for the likes of Stoke City and Manchester United before retiring in 2022.

Joining Ipswich Town's coaching line-up shortly after hanging up his boots, he went on to be appointed manager of League One side Huddersfield Town on a three-year contract in May 2025.

However, after just eight months in the role, he was sacked by the club following a defeat to West Bromwich Albion that left them 10 points off the top two in sixth place.

Speaking via the club's official website, Head of Football Stewart Mairs expressed his delight at securing Grant’s appointment, he said: "I’m delighted to welcome Lee to Walsall Football Club.

"The recruitment process for our new Men’s Head Coach has been extremely thorough and we have spoken to a number of outstanding candidates throughout.

"From the outset, we were very clear on the type of leader we wanted to bring to the football club — someone capable of driving standards, developing the group and helping us move the club forward.

"Throughout the process, Lee demonstrated a tremendous hunger and desire to be part of this football club.

"He is highly articulate, detail-oriented and possesses a strong understanding of the modern game, but just as importantly, he is an excellent person. It is our job to support him and maximise his skill set.

"We are pleased to welcome Lee and his family to the club and we look forward to working alongside him to achieve our goals over the coming years."
