Former Walsall Head Coach Mat Sadler has issued a statement, thanking the fans, players and staff for their support during his time at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium.Taking charge of 161 games, the former defender ended his time in WS1 with a win rate of almost 42% but will ultimately be remembered for guiding the team to the Play-Off Final at the end of 2025/26 before failing to build upon the momentum, as he was axed before they finished in the bottom half of the table.
Issued via the League Managers Association website, Sadler said: "Now that the season is over, I would like to thank Ben Boycott and Trivela Group for giving me the opportunity to become Head Coach of Walsall Football Club.
"When I joined three seasons ago, the club was facing uncertainty, and we experienced difficult periods early on.
"Despite that, there was a togetherness among the staff and players to push through those challenges and create a new culture.
"Over time, that resilience turned into progress. What was achieved during those three years is clear: Emirates FA Cup, Carabao Cup and EFL Trophy runs; the club’s second-ever Wembley appearance; a club record of nine consecutive wins; the development of young players into first-team and higher league football.
"This, in-turn, brought significant finances to the club; and the highest win percentage in 25 years, consistently outperforming our financial standing.
"As a result, we have helped move the club forward and leave it in a far stronger position than when I first became Head Coach.
"I want to thank the players, who went out onto the pitch every week and fought for each other with true togetherness.
"A culture was built on shared belief, hard work and commitment – an identity we strived to create. I have real belief in them, both as people and as players, and in their ability to continue their journey and progress.
"For now, I wish them a well-deserved break over the summer. As for the Walsall fans, thank you. You are a huge part of the football club, and I want to express my appreciation to those who stood by us through both the highs and the lows.
"It was a privilege and an honour to share those moments of success with you. At the time of my departure, I left the club three points outside the play-offs, and I'm confident that Walsall will continue to build on the progress that has been made.
"I would like to wish everyone connected with the club the very best for the future, and I look forward to the next opportunity in my career."
