NEWS & VIEWS

Walsall's 2025/26 season continues on Saturday afternoon as they and a sold-out away end make their way to the Croud Meadow and take on Shrewsbury Town in a televised League Two clash.

Winless in their last seven games, including last Monday evening's dreary defeat to MK Dons, the Saddlers are in desperate need of a return to winning ways.

Under-pressure gaffer Mat Sadler, who made over 200 appearances across two spells with the Shrews, simply has to guide his team to victory in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

While Sadler is keen to remain positive, there is little doubt that his time in WS1 is nearing its end. That is, unless he can begin to turn his team's form around.

A worrying lack of composure in defence and a far from potent attack has seen the team register just one point out of a possible twelve over the month of February, form that has seen them slip to 10th in the table.

With just fourteen games remaining, each and every point counts, so this weekend has to see something added to the tally, and, given the Saddlers' recent form, a draw is the most likely outcome.

THE OPPOSITION

Opponents, Shrewsbury Town, have been in fine form over the last month or so. Winning five on the bounce, recently appointed head coach Gavin Cowan has guided them to 17th in the table, some twelve points clear of the drop zone.

Their most recent outing saw them take all three points from a visit to Salford City, denting the Ammies' Play-Off hopes in the process.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

There have been 101 previous competitive meetings between Walsall and Shrewsbury Town, and it's the Saddlers that enjoy an overall statistical lead, having won on forty-five occasions compared to the Shrews' twenty-six.

There have been thirty draws over the history of the fixture, a history that began at Gay Meadow on Saturday, 17th November 1945, as the two sides met in an FA Cup, First Round clash that the Shrews won by five goals to nil.

THE LAST TIME WE MET

The most recent meeting took place at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium on Saturday, 13th December 2025, and saw the spoils shared as the teams played out a goalless draw.

Walsall went into an early lead with just three minutes on the clock, when Daniel Kanu made it eleven goals for the season in all competitions as he crashed an effort in off the crossbar from outside the area.

The visitors levelled the scores midway through the second-half when Tom Anderson's shot took a deflection that sent the ball past Myles Roberts and into the back of the Walsall net.

MATCH OFFICIALS

The EFL confirmed that Richard Eley will take charge of the match, with Oliver Nolan and Daniel Robinson being named as assistant referees. Michael Barlow has been selected as Fourth Official.
