Match Preview: v Grimsby Town (A)

Here we look ahead to Wednesday's League Two clash between the Saddlers and Mariners.
Bescot Banter - Walsall FC NewsWalsall will be back in Sky Bet League Two action on Wednesday evening when they make their way to Blundell Park and take on Grimsby Town.

MATCH INFORMATION

The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday, 17th February; the match has been moved as a result of the Mariners' Emirates FA Cup clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers taking place last Sunday.

Broadcast live on Sky Sports+, Wednesday's match will kick-off at 7.45pm, with Team News confirmed at 6.30pm.

NEWS & VIEWS

Winless in their last six league games, the Saddlers have slipped to 9th in the League Two table ahead of kickoff, and are in dire need of a change of fortunes as they seek to get their bid for promotion back on track.

Not seeing competitive action since their disappointing 3-1 defeat to Barnet back on February 7th, the team should be champing at the bit as they take advantage of a likely fatigued Grimsby side that was in action on Sunday afternoon as they faced Wolves in the FA Cup.

With Head Coach Mat Sadler under increasing pressure, this match could well prove crucial, as the recently-released statement from the Board of Directors made it clear things must improve, and quickly.

TEAM NEWS

On-loan Barnsley defender Kacper Lopata (thigh) has been passed fit for the Saddlers' midweek meeting with the Mariners. Jamille Matt (hip) could also be involved but faces a late fitness test.

Jake Hollman (hamstring) is out, as are Harry Williams and Elicha Ahui (both ACL).

THE OPPOSITION

As mentioned earlier, the Mariners last saw action on Sunday afternoon as they took on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Fourth Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Ultimately exiting the competition thanks to Santiago Bueno's 60th-minute goal, the Mariners will be hoping to return to the form that has seen them go nine games undefeated in the league, winning six of their last eight.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

There have been thirteen draws over the history of the fixture. A history which began at the Chuckery on Saturday, 22nd October 1892 as Walsall Town Swifts and Grimsby Town met in a League Division Two clash, the home side winning 3-1.

THE LAST TIME WE MET

The most recent meeting between the Saddlers and Mariners took place at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium on Tuesday, 19th August 2025, and saw the visitors win by a goal-to-nil.

Both sides created a handful of opportunities across the contest, but it was the visitors who would go into the lead in the second-half as Evan Khouri took advantage of a poor clearance to slam the ball home and secure the points for his side.

MATCH OFFICIALS

Thomas Parsons who is based in Lancashire, will take charge of the match, with Drew Dutton and Declan O'Regan being named as assistant referees. Declan Ford has been selected as Fourth Official.
