Sadler Wants Walsall to Be Braver Following Gillingham Defeat

Here's how the gaffer reacted to the Saddlers' second game of the 2025/26 League Two campaign.
Walsall boss Mat Sadler called upon his team to keep their heads up after suffering their first defeat of the season at the hands of Gillingham on Saturday afternoon.

Going into the match on the back of an opening day win over Swindon Town, the Saddlers struggled to make an impact in the final third, before Bradley Dack grabbed a goal in the second half.

Speaking to the assembled media, including Express & Star reporter George Bennett, Sadler said: "We had three good chances in the game.

"Charlie Lakin at the start of the game, Josh at the end and Rico has a good header in the first half as well.

"But I don't think that either team did enough to say that they were the better team on the day.

"When we go to places like this, we have to find ways of being braver and stamping our authority on the game more.

"We have to make sure that we're not too disheartened by that, and we need to make sure we learn from that.

"We've got a new group and there are some new experiences."
