Speaking ahead of Saturday's League Two season-opening clash with Swindon Town, Sadler insisted Romain could still make a return to the club, but will have to wait until other options have been explored.
33-year-old Sawyers made 161 first-team appearances between 2013 and 2016, and, after becoming a free agent earlier in the summer, has made several substitute appearances over the course of pre-season.
Speaking via the Express & Star, Sadler said: "There will probably come a natural point now that the games are going to start [looking elsewhere].
"We've left it open with each other. As it stands, we're trying to do a few things that will in part affect that. And we've got a budget that we've got to stick it.
"So I think it's important that we get the work done in that area and then maybe look at Romaine after that.
"That's probably how we've left things with each other. He'll now probably do the same and see what options he has.
"Then maybe we'll come together in a couple of weeks time."
