PRE-MATCH VIEWS

Walsall's worrisome form continued at the weekend as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat away to title-chasing Stevenage, a result which saw them register their eleventh league game without a win.

With Manny Monthé's second goal of the season the only highlight of a truly dismal first-half, Michael Flynn's side looked completely overawed by a Boro side that had been enduring its own spell of struggle.

However, in an act of charity which we're tired of witnessing, the Reds allowed their hosts to control the contest and got their promotion chase back on track in the process.

Despite the result, the Saddlers remain just twelve points off the Play-Off places and, if by some miracle they were able to string together a run of wins, could still earn a place in the top seven by the end of the season.

Obviously, that would men both attack and defence doing their jobs in the same game, which, despite the recent run of draws, can't always be relied upon.

Scoring at a little over a goal a game, it's not too hard to see why the Saddlers sit in the bottom half of the table, especially as the current crop of strikers are struggling to find the back of the net.

With Tuesday's clash with Swindon being one of the Reds' games in hand, a win is almost crucial, especially as there will be only eleven games remaining in the 2022/23 campaign.

Hopefully, with Michael Flynn's words ringing in their ears, the players will give the gaffer the response he so needs, as they're not only looking to secure their place in the team, but the club as a whole.

OPPOSITION NEWS

Opponents Swindon Town will arrive at the match on the back of a 2-1 defeat to surprise title-chasers Carlisle United, and a match that saw Cumbrians striker Ryan Edmondson snatch all three points in the sixth-minute of second-half stoppage time.

The defeat to Carlisle ended a three-game undefeated run for the Robins, a run which was preceded by a four-game winless spell.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

There have been a total of one-hundred-and-four competitive meetings between Walsall and Swindon Town. And it's the Robins who hold a small overall lead having won thirty-nine times compared to the Saddlers' thirty-six.

There have also been twenty-nine draws over the history of the fixture, a history which began at the County Ground on Saturday, 15th October 1927 as the two sides met in a Division Three (South) clash which the Robins won by five-goals-to-nil.

The Saddlers would go on to lose the next two meetings, conceding another seven goals in the process, as their opponents enjoyed a strong start to the rivalry.

In fact, Walsall wouldn't secure their first victory over Swindon until their fifth meeting, which took place at Fellows Park on Monday, 23rd September 1929, and saw the Saddlers triumph four-nil.

THE LAST TIME WE MET

The most recent meeting between the Saddlers and Robins took place at the County Ground on Boxing Day, Monday, 26th December 2022, and saw Walsall win by two-goals-to-one as Manny Monthé's late effort secured all three points for his side.
