Pre-Match News & Views

Walsall welcome mid-table Mansfield to the Banks's this weekend as they look to make it three games unbeaten after defeating Stevenage and holding Bradford City to a draw over the last two matchdays.

Buoyed by their recent defensive displays, the Saddlers will be looking to continue their recent moves away from the dropzone after enduring a tough start to the 2021/22 campaign.

During the build up to the match, Walsall Head Coach Matthew Taylor has spoken of his pride as his team has finally begun to show what they are capable of.

In terms of team news, the Saddlers will be without Rory Holden and Conor Wilkinson through injury. Holden recently underwent an exploratory procedure in his line-term knee issue, whilst Conor Wilkinson suffered a pulled hamstring last week but is expected to make a full recovery.

Defender Rollin Menayese will miss the match, as a clause in his loan agreement between the Saddlers and Stags means he can't play against his parent club.

Opponents Mansfield Town have suffered three consecutive defeats in the league and arrive at the match on the back of a 3-1 defeat to Harrogate Town.

The Stags will be looking to end their streak of defeats as they visit the Black Country on Saturday afternoon.

Head to Head

The Saddlers and Stags have met on sixty-one previous occasions, and it's Walsall who hold an overall head-to-head lead, having won twenty-eight times compared to Mansfield's nineteen.

There have also been fourteen draws over the history of the fixture, a history which began at Fellows Park on Saturday, 11th December 1926 as the two sides faced-off in a FA Cup - Second Round clash which saw the Saddlers score two goals without reply.

Their second meeting, which took place on Saturday, 26th November 1932, was also in the FA Cup and saw the Saddlers earn a place in the Second Preliminary Round thanks to a 4-1 win at Fellows Park.

The most recent meeting between the two took place at Banks's Stadium on Tuesday, 9th February 2021 and saw the teams share the spoils as goals from Walsall's Max Melbourne and Mansfield's Ollie Clarke weren't enough to separate the sides.

Man in the Middle

The EFL has confirmed that David Rock, who is based in Hertfordshire, will be the man in the middle, whilst Paul Stonier and Daniel Bonneywell have been named assistant referees. Ian Smedley will act as Fourth Official.
