Coy Clarke Keen to Make Several New Signings in January

With the January Transfer Window due to open in just a few week's time, Walsall manager Darrell Clarke has spoken to the press and confirmed that he would like to make 'three or four' additions to his squad as he targets 'forward thinking players.'
The Mansfield-born boss also confirmed that Saddlers fans could also see a few of the current crop depart for pastures new as the gaffer looks to improve his squad following a poor start to the 2019/20 campaign.

41-year-old Clarke oversaw a complete squad overhaul during the summer as he sought to re-balance the team following last season's dismal showing which ultimately resulted in relegation.

The manager, who isn't comfortable sharing too much information via the press, refused to identify which positions he was targeting additions for, but he did admit that will look 'outside the box' for new recruits.

Speaking via the Express & Star, Darrell said; "The tweak in the window for me has to be better forward thinking players and strengthen areas to help the lads. It’s as simple as that, the three or four that will come in, they have to be forward thinking players.

"I love the desire in my team, it’s a typical Darrell Clarke team with the desire and commitment. But it doesn’t feel like my team with the ball. We'll be looking to tweak the squad in January.

"Some coming in, some going out. But we're at Walsall, you don't go and get the ones that you really want, you're always looking outside the box. That takes time, a lot of people keep cards close to their chest.

"So forgive me if I'm not going to tell you what I'm looking at and what positions. At the end of the day the focus is that the squad needs improving, obviously we all know that.

"The thought process has been going on for the last few months. I know the window is shut but the way we look at it is that work was being done a few weeks ago. Trying to get the right players in at the right price and the right balance within the squad. Like anything, one or two might fall by the wayside."

After previously stating that he had spent his initial transfer budget wisely, Clarke went on to reveal that has been set a figure to spend in January as he looks to refresh his squad and 'build for the future'.

Clarke, who signed several inexperienced players in the summer is keen to add another experienced head to his team but will also be looking to sign more untapped talent as he begins to consider the shape of next season's squad.

Darrell added; "I've been given a figure that I have to play with. As a manager you'll always want more, every manager up and down the country does. But it's not a case of wholesale changes, we have to settle things down.

"Three of four coming in maybe three or four going out. It's looking that sort of way if you can get the right players in. You have to get players that are better than the ones we have. And ones that you can develop into good players.

"It's an important window for ourselves but it's an important window to build for the future as well. We'll maybe add one more experienced player into the group. But I don't see us being in the market for three or four experienced players because we're not really at that stage."
