Josh Gordon: 'Walsall Need to Be Challenging for Promotion'

Walsall striker Josh Gordon has spoken to the local press and insisted challenging for promotion has to be the aim for the club next season.
Since the Saddlers suffered relegation to the fourth tier there has been much debate among supporters and pundits about what is a realistic target for the new season, with some seeking a season-long rebuild whilst others believe an instant promotion push is the only thing we should be looking to achieve.

Gordon, who bagged nine goals from forty-five first-team appearances last season believes the Saddlers, who saw a twelve-year stay in League One come to an end when they were relegated on the final day of last season following a goalless draw with Shrewsbury Town, must challenge to make an instant return to League One.

Gordon has been handed the number 10 shirt by new manager Darrell Clarke and believes he and his fellow Saddlers have what it takes to challenge at the top of the table, but understands they will have their work cut out if they are to make that dream a reality.

Speaking via the Express & Star, Josh said; "From what I have seen from the manager and the new players, we really need to be at the top end of the table and challenging for promotion.

"We need to be challenging for the automatic spots or the Play-Offs. As a club and as footballers, that is the overall aim that we need to focus on.

"Having tasted that level of football, that is certainly where I want to be. Hopefully, we can make some history and get the club back to where we should be, that is in League One."

Following his appointment as manager, Clarke moved quickly to snap up midfielder Stuart Sinclair and defender James Clarke, the duo having played key roles in Clarke's promotion winning spells with Salisbury City and Bristol Rovers.

And Gordon is pleased the gaffer has added some proven winners to the Walsall ranks, he added; "I think it is good that we have brought in some players who have been in this situation before.

"The manager obviously has promotions under his belt with his previous teams and some of the lads that he has brought in have been through that with him."
