Walsall Vice Captain Paul Downing has spoken to the local press ahead of Saturday afternoon's Sky Bet League 1 clash with Crewe Alexandra, and has discussed the benefit of having players and a Head Coach that have achieved promotion before.

Speaking via the Express & Star, Paul said; “We have one or two players in the squad who have won promotion before. And while it’s only one or two, we are all experienced and have all played a lot of games together over a number of years.

“The manager has also done it a couple of times and that will be key for us. It does give you confidence knowing the manager has done it before. He has a very good reputation in the game thanks to what he has achieved. We trust what he does. I’m enjoying working under him and we are all learning lots of new things.”

When asked about Sean O'Driscoll, and what influence he has had on the team, Paul said; “Everyone has adapted to the new style and we have enjoyed the new way of working. He hasn’t changed too many things.

“It’s just been one or two tweaks. But that has improved us, it has given us a new dimension. We have had to change some things because teams are not just going to roll over and let us beat them. We have to come up with new ways to win games."
