Walsall manager Dean Smith has spoken to club journalists following Saturday afternoon's Sky Bet League 1 victory over then league leaders Gillingham, and has discussed his desire to remain at the top of the table, and achieve his pre-season goal of winning the league.

Speaking via Saddlers.co.uk, Dean said; “It’d be nice to stay there now. Our intention at the start of a season is to win the league. I’ve never shied away from that fact because I think it’s an injustice to the supporters if you’re not targeting that.

“When you’re competing against the likes of Wigan, Sheffield United and Coventry, it can be very difficult for clubs like ourselves, Burton and Gillingham. But we’re up there for a reason and we want to continue to do well. We know how important it is for everyone at the football club to keep this run going.”
