Following Saturday afternoon's pre-season victory over Luton Town, Walsall manager Dean Smith spoke to the local press and admitted that his pursuit of former Leeds United midfielder Zac Thompson appears to be off, as the player and his agent are considering other offers.
Speaking to Joseph Masi of the Express & Star, Smith quipped; "I have not heard from him or his agent since Thursday. That looks like it's dead in the water. I might hear from him on the way home I don't know."
Born in Wigan, Greater Manchester, Thompson, who can play both in midfield and defence, began his career as an apprentice with Premier League outfit Everton but signed his first professional contract with Leeds United, in 2011.

Over the next four years Zac, who is 22-year-old, went on to make around ten first-team appearances for the the Whites, and enjoyed a successful loan spell with Bury, where he went on to make almost thirty first-team appearances before being released at the end of last season.
Zac spent a few weeks on trial with Walsall earlier this month but was understood to have failed in his bid to earn a deal, but this swiftly changed as he was invited back and made appearances during the Saddlers' pre-season friendlies against West Bromwich Albion and Chasetown.
Thompson is said to be considering other offers as he seeks employment ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.
