Earlier today Walsall Football Club travelled to London Road to take on Peterborough United in the latest Sky Bet League 1 fixture of the season. We were in attendance and share our match report below.

It was Walsall that got the game underway, the early action was a little end to end, Luke James was bought down around 30 yards out, Maddison took the kick and hit the wall but did retain possession until the Saddlers managed to clear and brake up to the other end.

The Saddlers attack was easily quelled, as Jordan Cook's drive was blocked, the game continued in fairly frenetic fashion.

Madison was felled by Purkiss, the referee gave nothing though Madison did take a short while to regain his composure.

Luke James was the target of a Posh long throw, he could only glance wide as Richard O'Donnell, who was making his 101st appearance, wasn't troubled.

Kieron Morris and Ben Purkiss were heavily involved during the early exchanges as the Saddlers sought to target the wide men.

Jordan Cook was the first to really have an attempt at goal, following good play from Hiwula, Jordan turned inside on the edge of the box and sent a curling shot just wide of Alnwick's goal with the 'keeper at full stretch.

Kieron Morris continued his impressive showing as he played well down the wing, cut inside but saw his shot blocked by an alert defender.

After the 18 minute mark, James O'Connor felled his man as Posh threatened, the ball was played in but easily gathered by O'Donnell.

The Saddlers broke and entered a spell of good passing play, Posh stood firm but couldn't prevent the shot from Hiwula, Alnwick was alert to save.

It was then the hosts chance to break, Norris slipped in between the centre defenders and unleashed a shot, this was again saved by O'Donnell. The home side also won a corner but couldn't make use of it as Walsall broke.

The Saddlers went down the left-hand side, Taylor lifted the ball into the box towards Hiwula, Ntlhe did well to block, the resulting corner was eventually cleared.

Kieron Morris again took on his marker and earned a corner, which he took himself, the ball rose over it's initial target and arrived at Cain's feet, he sends a scissor kicked shot over the bar.

Michael Cain sent a left-footed shot wide of goal as Alnwick scrambled across his area.

Walsall were awarded a free kick as Ntlhe felled his man, the Saddlers didn't make great use of the ball but did keep possession.

Posh did muster a cross after 28 minutes but O'Donnell was alert to the danger and got the ball away quickly.

Soon after, Romaine Sawyers was the victim of a clattering foul by Michael Bostwick inside the Posh area, though to the Saddlers' bench surprise nothing was given and play continued.

Peterborough continued to struggle in the middle as Walsall dominated the ball.

Michael Cain was again set up for a shot as Hiwula and Sawyers combined, the Leicester City man could only fire wide.

Ben Alnwick was alert to smother the ball as the Saddlers broke once again, Walsall guilty of not taking their chances as the Posh seemed to be there for the taking.

As the half continued, Ntlhe felled an advancing Jordan Cook just wide of the Posh' box, Kieron Morris was the man to take the kick as Bostwick rose well to clear.

Former Hartlepool United striker Luke James broke down the wing as the Posh looked to take advantage of the counter, he was forced wide by James O'Connor and could only flash the ball wide of goal.

Kieron Morris beat his man down the other end, but could only send in a weak shot as Alnwick pounced.

The Posh sent another ball across goal as Taylor beat his namesake out wide, but Mclean didn't gamble and the chance was wasted.

As we reached the break the home side would have been delighted to go in level.

The Posh got the game back underway, but not after making the first change of the match, Harry Anderson replaced Taylor as they sought to deal with the Saddlers' pressure.

It was the Saddlers that had the opening foray into an opposition area, as Jordan Cook was just beaten to Jordy Hiwula's cross by an alert Zakuani.

The Posh's opening chance of the half was via Maddison on the counter, his cross was palmed away by O'Donnell, the resulting corner came to nothing.

Michael Bostwick was the first man to receive a caution as he fouled an attacking Kieron Morris, Michael Cain took the kick and sent it just wide of goal.

Kieron Morris and Romaine Sawyers then combined to feed in Adam Chambers, his shot was blocked.

Walsall won the opening corner of the half as the Posh defence failed to play an offside trap, the ball in was gathered by Alnwick as no Walsall head gambled on the cross.

Kieron Morris almost broke free as he was found out wide, his touch was too heavy as his marker recovered.

At the other end Aaron Mclean sent a chance well over the bar as Walsall allowed him a little too much room.

Peterborough continued to get back into the game Anderson and James combined to win a corner from O'Connor. The ball in was partially cleared, as was the return.

Soon after O'Donnell was again alert to danger, as he rushed out and cleared ahead of Washington.

Walsall manager Dean Smith then made a double change as Mantom and Forde replaced Sawyers and Hiwula.

Kieron Morris then sent a shot over the bar as he slipped ahead of contact.

Andy Taylor gave away a foul near the corner flag as he and James clashed. Anderson sent the ball in too deep although the host recovered and sent a ball back in, Anderson could only direct the ball wide of goal.

Anderson then had a shot palmed away as the home side looked to gain some control. Andersn took a short corner, the eventual ball in was cleared for another corner as the ball bounced around.

The second flag kick was played into the box and gathered by O'Donnell as Norris looked to send in a shot.

Maddison was then replaced by Newell as the Posh looked to continue their second half resurgence, and maybe get their play-off push back on track.

Jordan Cook had a shot saved as he turned his marker well, Alnwick again alert to the impending danger.

Zakuani did well to quell a Walsall attack as Mantom and Cook combined to find Morris, he is prevented from lashing in a shot as the defender was alert.

Michael Cain again sent a shot wide after great midfield play from the Saddlers. Jordan Cook was then replaced by Amadou Bakayoko as Smith shuffled the pack.

At the other end Luke James again tested the reflexes of Richard O'Donnell, he was up to the task.

Anthony Forde had a tame header gathered as Walsall looked to press late on. The Saddlers regained the ball but were swiftly dispossessed.

After a poor touch by Bakayoko, the Posh broke and had a Luke James effort saved after a good passing spell.

As we reached the latter stages of the game, including three minutes of stoppage time, the Saddlers had a good spell on the ball but couldn't get the ball into good positions in the final third.

Posh won a corner late on as the Saddlers looked to protect their point. The first flag kick was cleared for another after a brief attempt to attack.

The second corner was played in but could only be headed wide as the referee blew for full time.
