Yesterday afternoon Walsall manager Dean Smith spoke to the local media ahead of Saturday afternoon's Sky Bet League 1 clash with Crewe Alexandra, and offered an update on the current contract negotiations between the club and goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell.

Speaking to BBC WM, Smith, who confirmed that there is a lucrative two-year deal on the table ready to be signed, said; "We've made Richard a good offer and and now it's up to him whether he wants to sign.

"I'm hopeful. We'd love him to stay. And, at the moment, we're just waiting to hear back from him and his representative.

"He likes it here, he comes in with a smile on his face every day and we've offered him a really good contract, but now it's down to him."

Earlier in the day, Smith also spoke to the Express & Star, and admitted that negotiations are somewhat hampered by O'Donnell's agent travelling to and from other clubs, he said; “The talks with Richard have been going on for two months. His agent is a bit of a traveller in all honesty, in Australia and Denmark.

“We are trying to get a deal sorted out with him but it is proving quite hard. At the end of the day all we can do is offer the best possible deal we can give him and it is up to Richard to decide what he wants to do.”
