Walsall manager Dean Smith has spoken to the press ahead of Saturday afternoon's Sky Bet League 1 clash with Port Vale, and has discussed attacking midfielder Romaine Sawyers, who has been receiving much praise from people outside of the club.

Speaking to the Walsall Advertiser, Smith said; "(Rochdale manager) Keith (Hill) came and waxed lyrical about him after the game, saying ‘that kid's got a Premier League brain’.

“He said Rom was so hard to play against hence they had to change their system and put Olly Lancashire man to man against him to try to stop him.

"I think if you asked any of the coaching staff or the players I think the work rate has always been there. We've seen that from him. We knows what he gives us. He's got a style about him I think where people may see him as being a laid back character.

“But we work on the stats and when we had the GPS system here for a couple of months his stats were as good as anybody in terms of his work rate. So I'm surprised that's been levelled at him.

“It's a bit of a fallacy definitely because his numbers are higher than most people's in every game.”
