On Saturday afternoon Walsall Football Club made the trip to Essex to take on Colchester United in the latest Sky Bet League 1 fixture of the season.

It was the home side that started the game on the front foot, creating a couple of good chances, Watt having a drive blocked, before Healey sent a shot across goal, the U's forcing the Saddlers back into their defensive third.

Saddlers defender James O'Connor suffered a cut on his head via a Hewitt high-boot, and was subsequently replaced by Paul Downing after just four minutes.

United supporters appealed for a handball as 'keeper Richard O'Donnell slid to the edge of the area with ball-in-hand, referee Brendan Malone waved away the protests.

Walsall survived the early pressure and began to push a little higher up the field, but were limited to a couple shots from distance, neither of which tested the 'keeper.

After around fifteen minutes - the game became more fragmented, neither side able to make use of the ball.

The Saddlers almost gifted the U's a goal, a poor defensive pass between Andy Taylor and Richard O'Donnell was leapt upon by Healey, but his strike was tame and cleared by James Chambers.

Walsall won their first corner of the game at the twenty-five minute mark, which Anthony Forde took, his kick failed to beat the first man and was cleared.

Both sides continued to waste possession, and pose little risk to either 'keeper as we reached the half-hour mark.

Walsall broke down the other end following a poor U's midfield pass, Adam Chambers finding Jordan Cook with a superb pass, Cook went on to hit the woodwork from a tight angle.

The Saddlers opened the scoring after thirty-three minutes, Anthony Forde beating Wynter following a loose pass, he pushed the ball out wide to Jordan Cook who in-turn played the ball into the box, former Wolves winger Anthony Forde on-hand to head home.

Both Moncur and Fox had shots go wide from distance as the home side's supporters became very frustrated, as Walsall's defence looked to push further up the field.

Soon after Colchester's Sean Clohessy was booked for a very poor challenge on Tom Bradshaw, the defender going through his man from behind.

The rest of the half was a tame affair with neither side creating much in the final third, the referee's whistle couldn't have arrived sooner for either manager, with Dean Smith looking to capitalise on the lead, and Tony Humes hoping to get his side back into the game.

Walsall won a free kick early into the half, Gorkss fouling his man. Anthony Forde took the kick, which went over the wall and was easily gathered by Sam Walker.

Down at the other end Hewitt was found by Clohessy, he wasted his time on the ball with a soft effort that was easily saved by O'Donnell.

United were gifted a corner as Chambers' header crossed the dead ball line, Fox put the ball into the box but Paul Downing rose highest and headed out of the area.

Hewitt went down as he's fended off in the penalty area, but the referee had no interest in the shouts for a penalty from the home support.

At the other end Tom Bradshaw had an effort saved, Walker reading his flicked header well.

Watt beat his marker well, cut the ball back for Szmodics, who sent a volley over the bar from inside the area.

United looked to pile the pressure on the Walsall defence, the Saddlers having to defend for periods of time as Colchester sought an equaliser.

Gorkss sent a cross into the box, Wynter headed onto the bar, Walsall managed to clear the ball after a goalmouth scramble.

The home support continued to be frustrated at the referee, who they believe to be favouring the Saddlers.

Soon after Szmodics reacted well to a loose pass from the Saddlers' backline, he forced a save from O'Donnell.

Gorkss then directed a home throw in towards goal, his header not a threat to Richard O'Donnell, who easily gathered.

Walsall's Romaine Sawyers then sent a shot wide following a good pass from Forde.

United won a corner after seventy minutes, Wynter met it with a header that went just wide of the post.

Forde has a shot blocked by Wynter, the U's defence clearing up the loose ball too, Walsall seemingly content to look for a goal from distance.

Jordan Cook then sent a low shot just wide of Walker's post as the United defence backed off.

79'  COLCHESTER SUB  HEWITT OFF SEMBIE-FERRIS ON

As both sides made changes the game became quite fragmented. Andy Taylor was booked for a foul on Sembie-Ferris, the defender was take off soon after.

82'  WALSALL SUB  TAYLOR OFF HENRY ON

Moncur had an effort saved as the U's struggled to get the ball into the area, Walsall were content to sit in midfield and play the ball around as Colchester continued their bad run of form, the side had lost four in a row ahead of today's match.

The referee gave four minutes of added time, but this wasn't enough for United to get back into the game, as the Saddlers bounce back well from their defeat to Scunthorpe United last weekend.
