PAPER TALK: "WE ALWAYS PRACTICE PENALTIES"

Walsall manager Dean Smith has spoken to the press ahead of this evening's Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Area Semi-Final fixture against Tranmere Rovers, and has revealed that his side are prepared for the possibility of a penalty shoot-out.

Speaking to the Express & Star, Smith said; “We practice before every cup game. We did it before the Shrewsbury replay in the FA Cup and before Sheffield United and Rochdale in this competition.

“We always practice penalties on the training ground and we will do so again and make sure we’re prepared for it.

“You can’t have a set list of penalty-takers because you never know who is going to be on the pitch at the end of the game but we try to make it competitive on the training ground.

“They get into pairs and have something on it – whether it’s about cleaning one another’s boots or making the tea afterwards – and take the penalties after walking from the halfway line.

“We will do that again and then see who is on the pitch if it goes to it and, hopefully, pick the right ones.”
