Last season's top goal-scorer Craig Westcarr has today spoken of his surprise at his impending release, but has insisted he and manager Dean Smith parted on good terms...

Speaking to the Walsall Advertiser, Westcarr said: “We both agreed it was for the best that I left. He wants to go a different way and go with younger players which I totally respect and it’s his prerogative.

“When you have been involved all the time, scored goals and been a part of a lot of the goals the team has scored, it came as a bit of a surprise. But the manager has looked at it, taken a different view and he wants to go another way.

“That’s fair enough and it wasn’t like I was leaving on bad terms – we shook hands and parted on good terms. I wish him and Walsall all the best. There’s no bad feelings towards Walsall and hopefully it will be onwards and upwards for both parties really.”
