Soon-to-be former Walsall striker Craig Westcarr has today spoken of his belief that the club will have a difficult summer, and could find it hard to recruit players better than the ones they have let go...

Speaking to the Walsall Advertiser, Westcarr said: “It will be difficult because there are a lot of players who have gone and a lot of others who are unsure where they will be. It needs a few players to come in – and a few really good players at that to come in and take over from the ones they have lost.

“That’s the hardest thing – they are going to have to sign players who are better than the ones they have let go. And I think that’s going to be really difficult when you factor in the sort of wage levels that Walsall can stretch to.

“There’s players coming through but it’s about whether they can step up to the plate and that remains to be seen.

“I think it’s going to be a tough summer as they really need to regroup – I think there’s seven regular first-team players under contract so they need to get another nine or ten players in minimum.”

“Next season at the top you expect the likes of Bristol City, Sheffield United, Peterborough, Preston, Rotherham, and Bradford.

“That’s six or seven teams before you even start speaking about Walsall so it has to be a strong build for them to challenge.”
