Born in Wolverhampton on Wednesday, 22nd November 1967, Richard joined Shrewsbury Town as an apprentice in 1983, before rising through the ranks at Gay Meadow, making his first-team debut in 1986.
After over 100 appearances for the Shrews, Richard went on to spend a short time with Swindon Town before signing for Gillingham in 1992, where he would make over 200 league appearances over six years.
Joining Walsall in 1998, Richard formed part of the Saddlers' promotion-winning campaign in 1998/99 under manager Ray Graydon, where he would make 35 all-competition appearances and score one goal.
Following a brief loan spell with Rochdale, Richard joined Northampton Town in 2000, and would go on to secure promotion with the Cobblers at the end of the new-millennium campaign.
Returning to Rochdale on a permanent deal, Richard went on to hang up his boots in 2002 after making more than 430 league appearances across a sixteen-year career.
We would like to pass on our sincere condolences to Richard's family and friends during this sad time.
