Match Preview: v Fleetwood Town (A)

Here we look ahead to the Saddlers' League Two clash with the Trawlermen.
Bescot Banter - Walsall FC NewsWalsall's 2026/27 Sky Bet League Two campaign resumes on Saturday afternoon as they make their way to Highbury Stadium and take on Fleetwood Town.

Walsall have enjoyed an extended break between fixtures, with their most recent outing taking place back in September as they and Tranmere Rovers played out a one-all draw at Prenton Park.

After such a break from the beautiful game, the few players that had been battling minor injuries should be fighting fit for this weekend's trip to Highbury Stadium. And, after registering five draws from eight league games, boss Lee Grant could probably do with a few more options to select from.

Seeking to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 League Two season, the Saddlers are facing opposition that are winless in their last four league games, as the Trawlermen have suffered three league defeats in a row, after going six unbeaten to start the campaign.

Fleetwood did enjoy a win in midweek, however, as they defeated Barnsley 4-1 in the group stage of the Jersey Mike's Trophy - former Saddler Aaron Loupalo-Bi among the scorers on Tuesday evening.

This weekend's meeting could prove crucial for both sides, as the Saddlers are looking to keep pace with the teams around them, whilst Fleetwood are in dire need of a positive result to halt their slide down the table.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

There have been just seventeen competitive meetings between the two sides, and it's Walsall that hold an overall head-to-head advantage, as they've won eight times compared to Fleetwood's six. There have also been three draws.

The first meeting was an FA Cup - First Round clash that took place at the Highbury Stadium on Saturday, 6th November 2010. The teams went to a replay as Matt Richards' 4th-minute opener was cancelled out by Jamie Mullan in the second half.

Walsall went on to win the replay, played at the Banks's Stadium ten days later, as Reuben Reid bagged an unanswered brace to book his team's place in the Second Round.

THE LAST TIME WE MET

The most recent meeting, also in Sky Bet League Two, took place at the Saddlers' Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium on Tuesday, 3rd March 2026, and saw Fleetwood win by a goal-to-nil.

After winning for the first time in eight league games, Walsall head coach Mat Sadler was unable to make it two wins in as many games as the visitors scored the only goal of the game via Mark Helm, following a swift counter attack.

PLAYED FOR BOTH

Several players have made appearances for both the Saddlers and Trawlermen, including Peter Clarke, Zak Jules, Ellis Harrison, and Jamille Matt.

MATCH OFFICIALS

The EFL has confirmed that experienced Northern Irish referee Jamie Robinson will take charge of the match with Graeme Fyvie and Karl Buckley being named as assistant referees, whilst Jake Topp has been selected as Fourth Official.
