Walsall's 2026/27 campaign got underway on Thursday evening as they made their way to Gloucestershire and Ashton Gate Stadium where they took on Bristol City in Round One of the Carabao Cup.

The first goal of the game didn't arrive until the early stages of the second-half when Walsall made the most of a lapse in City's defensive concentration as summer signing Reece Smith squared the ball to an unmarked Aaron Pressley, who was only too happy to side-foot the ball home.
