Walsall's slim hopes of securing a place in the Sky Bet League Two Play-Offs have come to an end following Chesterfield's victory over Grimsby Town on Tuesday evening.Opening the scoring via Liam Mandeville shortly after the half-hour mark, the Spireites doubled their lead just three minutes later when Lee Bonis scored his 15th goal of the season.
The Mariners were able to cut their hosts' lead via a Jaze Kabia goal a few minutes before the break but, after seeing a stoppage penalty saved, were unable to break their opponents down as they now sit four points outside the top seven heading into the final few weeks of the campaign.
After losing twice in as many games, Walsall were already on the outside looking in, but their participation in the 2026/27 edition of League Two has now been confirmed as they sit ten points off the Play-Offs with just three games remaining.
