Match Preview: v Cambridge United (H)

Here we look ahead to the Saddlers' League Two meeting with the U's.
Bescot Banter - Walsall FC NewsWalsall's 2025/26 League Two campaign continues on Tuesday evening when they welcome Cambridge United to the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium.

MATCH INFORMATION

The match will take place at the Saddlers' Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium on Tuesday, 17th March 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 7.45pm. Team news will be confirmed at 6.30pm.

NEWS & VIEWS

After losing three times in as many games, the Saddlers finally returned to winning ways on Saturday afternoon as interim head coach Darren Byfield began his spell with a welcome win against Crewe Alexandra.

Making a tactical switch that saw the backline reshaped into a 4-man line, there were more players in attacking positions, with Albert Adomah able to produce some of the form that has seen him earn 865 appearances over a prolonged career.

Scoring two goals and providing Aaron Pressley with an assist, the former Ghana international was in superb form as he helped the Saddlers ease past the shell-shocked Alex in front of over 1,000 travelling fans.

Of course, none of us should be fooled by what was just a second win in twelve league games, but the performance was one that showed desire, determination, and belief as almost every player rose to the occasion.

Going into Tuesday's clash with the U's, we're no closer to knowing who will replace Mat Sadler, and, given the win in Crewe, we would be happy to see Darren given the role until the end of the season.

Whatever happens over the next few games, it's clear there's a strong team hiding amongst the squad, and, with Byfield offering a clean slate, we could be about to see what they're truly made of. Bring on the U's!

THE OPPOSITION

Sitting third in the table ahead of kick-off, opponents Cambridge United haven't suffered defeat in seven games and will reach their trip to WS1 on the back of a 5-0 triumph over Gillingham.

Goals Dominic Ball, Louis Appéré, an unfortunate Lenni Cirino, Sullay Kaikai and Shayne Lavery saw the Gills concede five goals for the second time in as many games.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Walsall and Cambridge United have met on just seventeen previous occasions, and it's the Saddlers who hold an overall head-to-head lead, having won eight times compared to the U's seven.

There have been just two draws over the history of the fixture, a history which began at Fellows Park on Boxing Day, Wednesday, 26th December 1973, as the two sides faced off in a Division Three clash which saw the Saddlers score three goals without reply.

THE LAST TIME WE MET

The most recent meeting took place at the U's Abbey Stadium on New Year's Day, Thursday, 1st January 2026, and saw the home side win 2-0.

The first goal of the game didn't arrive until the second minute of first-half stoppage time. James Brophy was quick to react to a defensive error as he passed the ball to Ben Knight, who happily struck the ball into the back of the net.

Cambridge doubled their lead early in the second-half when, following yet more defensive pondering, Knight lofted the ball over an onrushing Myles Roberts to give his side a seemingly comfortable advantage.

Walsall were awarded a late penalty following a foul inside the area, but it wasn't to be, as substitute Aaron Pressley was denied from the spot by goalkeeper Jake Eastwood, who produced a strong save to retain his clean sheet.

MATCH OFFICIALS
