Walsall Under-18s returned to EFL Youth Alliance Cup action on Saturday morning as they welcomed Oldham Athletic to the Birmingham County FA headquarters on Ray Hall Lane. The young Saddlers have been in fine form as of late, making progress in local Senior Cup competitions, and the Alliance itself, as they were able to turn around what was a disappointing start to the campaign.
Reaching the game on the back of an FA Youth Cup, Second Round defeat to Wigan Athletic, Walsall were looking to get straight back to winning ways as they took on the young Latics as the Excellence Arena.
WALSALL
Harrison Barber; Ellis Harris, Marley Roberts, Finn Batham, Jakub Pawlowski, Stan Straw, McLloyd Oben, Louie Webb, Paul Makavore, Will Etheridge, Dylan Thomas
Substitutes: Ben Roberts, Archie Bunn, Olly Nash, Younusa Kanyi, Lincoln Hunt
Naming a team made up of both scholars and younger age group players, Head Coach Ryan Simmonds' side grabbed the opening goal of the game on the stroke of half-time when Stan Straw headed the ball into the back of the net.
Walsall doubled their lead early in the second half when Louie Webb, who had gone close to opening the scoring in the first forty-five, crashed the ball into the bottom corner of the Latics' goal.
A great result for Ryan and the young Saddlers, who continue their strong run of results and make it into the Semi Final of the Youth Alliance Cup.
