PRE-MATCH VIEWS

After drawing six of their last seven League Two games, Michael Flynn's Saddlers are hoping to return to winning ways this weekend as they travel County Durham where they are due to take on Hartlepool United.

Facing the team they defeated comfortably on the opening day of the season, Walsall will be looking to do the double and taste their first league victory since they defeated Mansfield Town on New Year's Day.

With goals somewhat hard to come by, Flynn's flyers simply have to begin to make more of their opportunities in front of goal, something which was very evident during Saturday's draw with Crewe, which saw some sixteen shots come to nothing as the spoils were shared.

Opponents Hartlepool United are in the midst of a slump of their own, and arrive at the match winless in their last four and in need of three points as they hope to move away from the battle to beat the drop.

With former York City boss John Askey taking the reins - Keith Curle losing his job in midweek - the Pools will be looking to take advantage of the fabled new manager bounce and return to winning ways.

FORM GUIDE

Walsall haven't won any of their last four away league games, whilst Hartlepool have won just once in their last seven home league games, meaning this weekend's match is a meeting of two of League Two's strugglers.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

Walsall and Hartlepool have met on fifty-six previous occasions, and it's the Saddlers who hold a minor Head-to-Head advantage having won twenty times compared to the Pools' eighteen.

There have also been eighteen draws over the history of the fixture, a history which began at Fellows Park on Saturday, 22nd October 1921 as the sides met in a Division Three (North) clash which Walsall won by three-goals-to-one.

THE LAST TIME WE MET

The most recent meeting between Walsall and Hartlepool United took place at Poundland Bescot Stadium on Saturday, 30th July 2022 - the opening day of the season.

The match saw on-loan Mansfield Town striker Danny Johnson net a debut hat-trick as the Saddlers put four past the Pools, Brandon Comley also bagging a debut goal.

MATCH OFFICIALS

The EFL has confirmed that Darren Drysdale, who is based in Lincolnshire, will be the man in the middle, whilst Simon Clayton and Mark Jones have been named assistant referees. Jake Topp will act as Fourth Official.
