Walsall's search for a new manager appears to be nearing its end as the club is said to be close to agreeing terms with former Newport County boss, Michael Flynn.

41-year-old Flynn enjoyed a nineteen-year playing career where he turned out for the likes of Newport County, Wigan Athletic, Gillingham, Blackpool, Huddersfield Town, and Bradford City, and has seen his odds narrow over the last few days.

The Newport-born former midfielder, who has been out of work since leaving Newport last October, has form for helping teams avoid the drop as he oversaw the Exiles' escape from relegation in 2016/17, as he was able to beat the drop despite taking over a team sitting some eleven points adrift at the bottom of League Two.

Before leaving Rodney Parade, Flynn helped Newport reach the League Two Play-Off final last season, where they lost to Morecambe.

The Saddlers are searching for a new Head Coach following the recent departure of Matt Taylor, the former midfielder axed after seeing his side go winless in their opening eight games of 2022, including a seven-game losing streak.

If appointed before this weekend's meeting with table-topping Forest Green Rovers, Flynn will take charge of a winning side as interim boss Neil McDonald was able to guide his team to victory over Tranmere Rovers last weekend.
