Former Walsall defender Matt Preston has issued an update after suffering a serious injury during the opening stages of Kidderminster Harriers' National League - North clash with Alfreton Town on Saturday afternoon.

Preston, who recently hit the headlines for his superb performance against Premier League outfit West Ham United in the Emirates FA Cup, was stretchered off after suffering what has now been confirmed as a significant ankle injury following a clash with an Alfreton attacker.

The meeting at Aggborough was ultimately abandoned as a result of the lengthy treatment required before Matt could be taken to hospital, but the Birmingham-born defender has since issued an update via his official Twitter account, confirming he has undergone an operation before thanking fans and friends for their support.

Tweeting from his hospital bed, Matt said; "Just out from my first surgery, honestly blown away by the love shown, completely overwhelmed.

"Thank you to everyone who has messaged, it is massively appreciated, and not a single one has been overlooked! But I’ll be back stronger.

"Also, would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to the medical staff [at Kidderminster Harriers] the way they handled the situation, and me. Credit to the club and yourselves. I owe everyone a beer."
