Heading into the clash on the back of their two-all draw with Exeter City, the Saddlers turned their attention to the EFL Trophy and a clash with Northampton Town.
With three points secured from their first group game, a meeting with Brighton's Under 23s, Walsall had a good performance to build upon as they travelled the short distance to Sixfields.
The Saddlers started the game strong and were able t take an early lead as Brendan Kiernan and Emmanuel Osadebe combined, for the latter to slip the ball under former Walsall trialist Jonny Maxted.
Annoyingly for the Saddlers they were unable to hold onto their lead for the entire match as they went on to give away a penalty as Kion Etete was felled by Manny Monthé with Dylan Connolly happy to oblige from the spot.
The match ultimately went to a penalty shoot-out, with the winner - securing a bonus point for their efforts.
