Pre-Match News & Views

We've reached the second weekend of the Saddlers' 2021/22 League Two campaign and are yet to see what the new-look Reds are capable of.

Goalless in their two outings - a league clash with Tranmere Rovers and cup meeting with Doncaster Rovers - Matthew Taylor's side go into their third game of the season in search of a complete performance.

Both the Tranmere and Doncaster games ended in defeat but also saw the Saddlers hint at the possibilities as neither game was a foregone conclusion, especially the midweek Carabao Cup loss to Doncaster, which saw the Reds start brightly before fading as the match went on.

Clearly, it's very early days, and games will no-doubt be lost, but there are plenty of promising signs to focus upon as the recently-rebuilt squad continue to learn what they're able to do.

However, the team must find a way to get some points on the board sooner rather than later as we must avoid a repeat of last season's truly dismal campaign.

Opponents Forest Green opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory over last season's National League champions Sutton United before knocking Bristol City out of the Carabao Cup on penalties in midweek.

Head to Head

Walsall and Forest Green have met on just five previous occasions, and it's the Saddlers who hold an overall head-to-head lead, having won three of the games.

Whilst Forest Green haven't defeated the Saddlers, they have held them to two draws, including during the first meeting which took place at the Banks's Saturday, 10th August 2019 and saw James Hardy level the scores following Joseph Mills' late first-half penalty.

Man in the Middle

The EFL has confirmed that Simon Mather will be the man in the middle, whilst Richard Woodward and Mark Jones have been named assistant referees. Christopher Husband will act as Fourth Official.
