James Clarke Named Walsall's PFA Community Player of the Year for 2020/21

Saddlers defender James Clarke has been chosen as the club’s PFA Community Champion for 2020/21.
James Clarke PFA Community Player of the Year.
Awarded by Walsall FC Community Programme and the PFA, the accolade celebrates the player who has made an outstanding contribution to the local community.

Clarke and the first-team squad took part in a number of virtual player engagements this year, such as sending video or phone messages to Saddlers supporters during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The skipper also fronted the club’s coverage of the EFL’s ‘You Vs Train’ campaign, encouraging safety on the railway and warning youngsters about the dangers of stepping onto the tracks.

He has also championed mental health for the Community Programme, taking part in a video interview on World Mental Health Day alongside Josh Gordon. The pair discussed the importance of mental health and their own experiences within football.

Clarke, speaking via the club's official website, said; "I’m really pleased to receive the award and want to thank Walsall FC Community Programme for allowing me to be more involved this year.

"It’s a shame myself and the first-team weren’t able to do more in person this season, but doing some of the videos and visits virtually has been enjoyable too."

Adam Davy, Community Director, said; "While it has been an unprecedented season, it has still been good to see players engaging virtually with our projects and the fans.

"From the start of the year, James made it clear he would like to be more involved with the community, and he has been a great role model for Walsall Football Club."
