Match Preview: Forest Green Rovers (H)

Here we take a look ahead to this evening's League Two clash between Walsall and Forest Green Rovers.

Pre-Match Views

Brian Dutton's Saddlers have drawn all of their last four games as their already lengthy winless spell shows very little sign of coming to an end - hopefully famous last words on our part.

Despite recent improvements at the back - earning three clean sheets in their last four - the attacking line has shown no such positive signs as goals have become far too much of a premium.

With this season's top-scorer now plying his trade in Luton, his now former colleagues must find a way to hit the back of the net, and soon.

Sitting seven points above the drop zone, and with seven games remaining, the Saddlers have plenty of opportunity to secure safety, but this opportunity continues to shorten by each passing matchday.

Head Coach Dutton has recently welcomed the Saddlers' run of draws, insisting the team is slowly pulling itself towards safety, and, whilst that may be true recent displays have been less-than inspiring.

With a mass exodus and rebuild likely to swiftly follow the end of the season, we'd like to know if the team's future lies in League Two before the curtain comes down on the campaign.

Opposition News

Opponents Forest Green Rovers have won just one of their last seven league games and will be keen to return to winning ways as they visit WS1 on the back of a trio of defeats.

Sitting in the Play-Off places despite their poor run of form, Rovers are just two points below the automatic promotion places and will provide a tough test for the out-of-form Saddlers as both need points although for very different reasons.

Head to Head

Walsall and Forest Green have met on just four pervious occasions, and it's the Saddlers who hold an overall head-to-head lead having won two games.

Whilst Forest Green haven't defeated the Saddlers, they have held them to two draws including during the first meeting which took place at the Banks's Saturday, 10th August 2019 and saw James Hardy level the scores following Joseph Mills' late first-half penalty.

The most recent meeting took place at the New Lawn on Saturday, 3rd October 2020 and saw the spoils shared as Jamille Matt levelled following Caolan Lavery's first-half opener.

Man in the Middle

The EFL has confirmed that Ross Joyce, who is based in Cleveland will be the man in the middle, whilst Andrew Dallison and Darren Wilding have been named as assistant referees. Christopher Ward will act as Fourth Official.
