Martin O'Connor: "Recruitment is Key"

Former Walsall midfielder, coach, assistant, and caretaker manager Martin O'Connor has taken to social media to offer his views on the current state of the Saddlers.
Martin, who briefly formed part of former Walsall manager Dean Keates' backroom team before taking temporary charge towards the end of last season, believes it is crucial the seeks to recruit players who can not only offer an immediate impact on the pitch but also provide a potential financial boost off of it.

The Saddlers slipped to their sixth successive defeat on Saturday afternoon as they made the trip to the County Ground where they took on and were defeated by promotion-chasing Swindon Town.

Despite on-loan Salford City striker Rory Gaffney grabbing his first goal in twelve Walsall appearances, goals from Eoin Doyle and Diallang Jaiyesimi proved to be enough to secure all three points for Robins, adding to the Saddlers' woes.

O'Connor went on to praise the club's Academy system, which has produced several well-known professionals, before bemoaning the fact that the club appears to have moved away from that model over recent years.

Speaking via his official Twitter account, Martin said; "If you have millions or thousands recruitment is key in either case you have to get the best players in but not just on ability but mental strength and resale value if you can!

"Walsall have always produced their own and have gone away from this so that has to be a key."
