Darrell Clarke: "We've Got to Be a Lot More Dangerous"

Walsall manager Darrell Clarke has spoken to the press following Tuesday evening's League Two draw between the Saddlers and Newport County, and admitted that his team, which has scored just two goals in their four league outings, needs to become more clinical in front of goal.
Clarke, who added fifteen players to his squad during a summer rebuild, went on to insist that his team deserve to have secured a few more points than they have already achieved despite continuing to misfire, netting just twice in the league so far this season.

The manager was also keen to praise his defensive players as they were able to prevent Newport from grabbing a winner, earning their second clean sheet of the campaign and continuing their promising start to the season.

Speaking to the assembled media, Darrell said; "We’ve got to be a lot more dangerous but that will come. It’s early days yet. I think, if I’m being honest, we deserve to be a couple of points better off than we are after four league games.

"It was a very, very scruffy, tight game and I think we didn’t work the ball well enough in areas to be able to give our strikers enough opportunities – but out strikers have got to do better as well.

"The positive for me was that defensively as a team – I thought my back three, back five were magnificent in defending against a very dangerous Newport team. They have scored a lot of goals already this season and I thought we limited them to one set-piece opportunity.

"Other than that, we’ve defended very, very strongly. It’s something that we looked at from last season where the club was shipping something like two goals every game which gives you no chance to win football games.

"So four games in the league, two goals conceded, one a penalty, an individual mistake – we can take the positives from that but we know as a team we have to do a lot more offensively."
