Liam Roberts: 'Communication is Key'

Walsall's first-choice goalkeeper Liam Roberts, who has kept three clean-sheets so far this season, has spoken to club journalists and discussed how he stays focused during games, with the 23-year-old revealing that communication is key.
Roberts, who made his way through the ranks at Banks's Stadium to become first-choice stopper, has made thirteen appearances so far this season and believes that he has benefited from having a strong, commanding back-line in front of him, allowing him to focus on the task in hand.

Speaking via the club's official website - Saddlers.co.uk - Liam said; "To stay focused in a game I will always try and talk all the way through. If you are talking to the people in front of you and commanding them then you are always involved in the game.

"If I am standing there and watching the game go by, then I am mentally switched off. If I am talking to everyone then I am staying switched on, it’s the best way to do it I believe.

"I think the back four are a lot more vocal this season. They are a lot more commanding. I don’t know whether that is because of the working partnership that we have in the team, the togetherness.

"We now demand higher standards from each other. If something isn’t good enough, then it is there to be said and then it is just left on the football pitch."

Liam then went on to talk about earning the club's number one shirt, where he admitted that the day he learned of his first-choice selection was one of his 'greatest days', he continued; "Getting the number one shirt was one of my greatest days.

"The amount of hard work I have put in during the years I have been at the club, it was just a great day to see that number one shirt when I came into the training ground.

"It’s massive to have the number one on my shirt. It is something I have wanted since I was a kid - that is what my dream was. It is perfect to have it at this club."
