Jon Whitney: "Something Isn't Working. We Need to Find More Fight"

Jon Whitney has admitted that something isn't working and called upon his players to find more belief as they look to build momentum and avoid dropping closer to the battle to avoid relegation.
Walsall manager Jon Whitney has spoken following his side's disappointing defeat to title-chasing Shrewsbury Town, and admitted that 'something isn't working' as his side continue to offer very little in the way of momentum.

The Saddlers are winless in their last six, losing four of their last five league outings and are still among the sides battling to avoid relegation. With so few games remaining the manager admitted that it is time for some of the players to step forward as they seek to secure their status in the third tier of English football.

Jon, who was speaking on the touchline at the Shrews' Montgomery Waters Meadow, said; "I need to take a good look at things, the players themselves have to have a good look at things and then collectively as a group we need to look at it. Something isn't working. We need to find more fight.

"It’s no good me trying to enthuse the players every week, they have to find it within themselves. They have to find more belief. We can just keep saying they are a young team and young players. They are playing in League One, they are playing men's football. I want people to step forward in the next seven to 10 days before we play Wigan."

Following last weekend's defeat to the Shrews, the Walsall first-team are not back in action until they face league leaders Wigan Athletic on Wednesday, 21st March, giving the manager some unwanted time to work on a few issues.

Whitney continued; "It's a bad thing we've now got such a long break. You don’t want that long to put things right. On the one hand it does give us a chance to work on a few things.

"But you can also have to add to that with the international break, a few players will be possibly going away. I think it’s going to be testing times. I think the squad will be threadbare if those players are called up. But that is what we have to deal with."
