MAN v FAT Football is a 14 week, six-a-side football league exclusively designed to support overweight and obese men to improve their physical and mental health. Launched in 2016 by male weight loss specialists, MAN v FAT, it appeals to men who love football but hate being fat.

Teams of men play a weekly game of football with a weigh-in before. The goals from the game are added to bonus goals teams can earn through their performance on the scales. The process means that regardless of your fitness levels or weight any player can play and make a difference in the only league where losers win.

Andy Dyke, National Participation Manager of Recreational Football at the Football Association said, "MAN v FAT Football is a brilliant initiative for anyone who wants to address their weight and start working their way back into playing football. The results of the leagues are extremely impressive. You might be thinking that your footballing days are behind you, but MAN v FAT Football is a great bridge back into the national game. The FA are happy to back the scheme and suggest that players visit www.manvfatfootball.org to get started."

The leagues are designed to support men with a multi-layered behaviour change process which engages men through the game and through online and offline support networks. These include the www.manvfat.com website and the www.talk.manvfat.com forum, which reach over a million men every year. Players are also supported with a specially-produced handbook and a dedicated MAN v FAT Football Weight Loss Coach.

Builder Ben Gallon became one of the first MAN v FAT Footballers when he joined the first free league in Solihull in January 2016. He said: "I was obese and facing a knee operation which I only really needed because of my weight and I saw this and thought I’d give it a go with my brother. I love football and I desperately needed to lose weight.

"After a season I’d lost over 26 per cent of my body weight and unsurprisingly my knee was no longer an issue! I’ve since gone on to work as a coach with MAN v FAT Football because I believe that it’s an amazing opportunity for men to get back into football and get healthier."

With over 90% of players on the leagues losing weight and the average weight loss over a 14 week season being just under 2 stone it's easy to see why there are nearly 60 leagues across the country now. In total the leagues have helped men to lose nearly 65 tons and in 2018 we want to support even more men. If you're thinking about getting in shape in 2018 then find your nearest league at www.manvfatfootball.org and sign up - the only thing you have to lose is weight.
