Youth Alliance | Shrewsbury Town 2 Walsall 1

Graham Biggs and his Walsall Under-18s travelled to Lilleshall where they took on Shrewsbury Town in the opening game of the EFL Youth Alliance season.
On Saturday morning Walsall's Under-18s opened their EFL Youth Alliance campaign away to Shrewsbury Town. Here is an update for the opening game of the season.

Graham Biggs' side finished last season's campaign in third position and will be keen to build upon that over the course of the new campaign.

The Shrews started the game strongly, carving out several strong attacking positions but were unable to open the scoring as the Saddlers' defence stood firm, even breaking to create openings of their own.

Our hosts opened the scoring after thirty-minutes as Charley Higgs latched on to a Josh Agbozo through ball to slot the ball into the bottom-left corner of the Saddlers' goal.

The Saddlers started the second-half well and would go on to level the scores ten minutes in as Stefan Mason slotted the ball past Cameron Gregory in the Shrews goal.

Shrewsbury would go on to break Saddlers hearts late on as Cameron Esien got on the end of Ryan Barnett's free-kick to secure all-three points for his side as they begin the Youth Alliance campaign with a win.

A disappointing defeat for the Saddlers who did create plenty of opportunities but were thwarted by some superb Salop defending.

Walsall are back in Alliance action next weekend as they play host to Morecambe at Ray Hall Lane.
