Makris Starts as Cyprus Ease to Victory

Walsall striker Andreas Makris was named among the starting XI as Cyprus took on Kazakhstan in an international friendly at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia.
Walsall striker Andreas Makris was named among the starting XI as Cyprus took on Kazakhstan in an international friendly at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia.

The match, which Cyprus were using as a warm-up for their upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup Group H qualifying clash with Estonia, which will take place at the GSP on Saturday, was a competitive affair as both sides hit the back of the net.

Kazakhstan opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark as FC Ordabasy midfielder Tanat Nusserbayev slotted the ball past Constantinos Panayi in the Cyprus goal.

Cyprus were unable to get back on level terms before the break but took charge of the match in the second half as Roda JC Kerkrade striker Nestoras Mitidis, who is currently on loan to AEK Larnaca, equalised ten minutes into the second forty-five.

Cyprus went into the lead seven minutes later, as midfielder Fanos Katelaris drove the ball past Stas Pokatilov in the Kazakhstan goal. The home side further extended their lead just a few minutes later as Demetris Christofi took advantage of some slack defending to slot home.

There were no further goals but the game will serve as a great confidence builder for Andreas' side as they prepare for their upcoming clash with Estonia.
